Workshop
Summary
Chimpanzee populations
continue to decline throughout their home range
and various efforts are being employed by various
Governments, institutions and Non-Governmental
organizations to halt this trend amidst global
challenges of human population growth, poverty
and climatic change. Ngamba Island was established
in 1998 to care for rescued orphan chimpanzees
in Uganda, and up-to-date continues to register
high influx of baby chimpanzees being confiscated.
The focus of this workshop is to review all efforts
being undertaken, identify challenges and develop
strategies for future management.
The workshop
aims to bring together local and internationally
renown researchers, conservationist, policy analysts,
academicians, Government, Non-governmental agencies
and the general public. The participants will
discuss and provide practical insights into the
efforts being undertaken in tackling existing
challenges and to better understand current issues
in chimpanzee conservation. The outcome of these
discussions will form a basis for reviewing policies
and development of guidelines for ape conservation.
These include:
- Policy for ape management
outside protected areas
- Best practices for sanctuary
