The BORN FREE FOUNDATION is an international wildlife charity founded by the actors Virginia Mckenna and Bill Travers following their starring roles in the classic wildlife file “Born Free’. Their eldest son, Will Travers, is now Chief Executive of the Foundation. The Born Free Foundation aims to help individual wild animals and to conserve species and their habitats in the wild. www.bornfree.org
The ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION TRUST OF UGANDA (ECOTRUST) was established in August 1990 as a sustainable funding institute to support the conservation of biological diversity and alleviate poverty through sustainable economic development activities. Through grants and loans, ECOTRUST supports programmes promoting conservation and sustainable development; and effective and efficient use of natural resources within Uganda’s development process. ECOTRUST also obtains land through purchase, donation and long-term lease, or acquires land development rights which is managed for both conservation and sustainable economic development in partnership with the local communities. www.ecotrust.or.ug
The INTERNATIONAL FUND FOR ANIMAL WELFARE (IFAW) began in 1969 when Brian Davies decided to fight against the seal hunts in Canada. Today, IFAW is an international NGO with offices on each continent. They support animals in crisis, both domestic and wild. They have three programmes running: Animals in Crisis, Habitat and Commercial Trade of Wildlife. IFAW has been involved in Uganda for many years supporting the protected areas such as Queen Elizabeth and Kidepo Valley National Parks. www.ifaw.org
The JANE GOODALL INSTITUTE (JGI) is an international organisation primarily concerned with the conservation of primates. Established by Dr Jane Goodall whose work at Gombe, Tanzania, revolutionised chimpanzee research, JGI has 11 branches around the world as well as countless education programmes about the conservation of wildlife, facilitated through their “Roots & Shoots” education programme. www.janegoodall.org
The UGANDAN WILDLIFE EDUCATION CENTRE TRUST (UWECT) began as a wildlife orphanage in 1956, later becoming the Entebbe Zoo. Animals from all over Uganda and bordering countries have been brought to the Entebbe Zoo for care. In 1991, the New York Zoological Society developed a master plan for the transformation of the Entebbe Zoo into the Ugandan Wildlife Education Centre Trust. UWECT is moving towards becoming a conservation initiative contributing to the welfare of wildlife in Africa. UWECT is the official holding facility for all confiscated animals in Uganda. www.uweczoo.org
THE UGANDA WILDLIFE SOCIETY (UWS) has existed since January 1993 initially as a branch of the East African Wildlife Society. The UWS mission is to promote the conservation of wildlife and environment in Uganda through environmental advocacy; environmental education and creation of awareness; and gives support to research and management projects. www.uws.or.ug
The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) was established in 1996 as a statutory body after merging the Uganda National Parks and Game Department.
